The Spirit of Liverpool has finally landed!

An 8ft Liver Bird has found a new home in the centre of Liverpool.

The bronze Spirit of Liverpool, which has been welcoming cruise liners into the city during the summer is to be moved to the shopping mall just outside Central Station and will be unveiled there by Ken Dodd on Thursday, October 22.

And now it has been announced that donations will be made to two local charities for every Spirit of Liverpool product sold on line during the build up to Christmas.

The bird is a giant version of statues that have been sold to more than 40 countries and been presented to high profile VIPs visiting the city, including The Queen.

Central is the busiest underground station outside London and the bird will be keeping a watch over the vast numbers of shoppers, commuters and tourists who pass through the shopping mall every day.

The Spirit of Liverpool is the creation of sculptor Rick Myers of Liver Birds Inc who has also written and illustrated a children’s book about the history of the birds.

He said: “Versions of the bird have been presented to captains of liners making the inaugural visits to the Mersey so it was fitting that the big version welcomed tourists sailing into Liverpool. Now she will be right in the heart of the city.”

Rick’s business partner, former Liverpool Echo journalist Arthur Johnson, said: “Ken Dodd is an old friend and supporter of ours and we are delighted that, as a freeman of the city, he has agreed to welcome the bird to her new home. We hope plenty of people will turn out to see him unveil her at 2.30 pm next Thursday (Oct 22).”

A donation to Claire House, the Wirral-based children’s hospice and Autism Together, the new title for Wirral Autistic Society will be made for every Spirit of Liverpool product sold on-line during the build up to Christmas.

Tony Langan, a Liverpool-based fund-raiser for Claire House, said: “While our hospice is situated on Wirral around half of the families we support are from Liverpool. Because of this we are delighted that The Spirit of Liverpool and Ken Dodd are helping us raise much-needed funds.”

Rick, who is the fund-riser for Autism Together which supports many Liverpool families added: “I have been a professional fund-raiser for charities for many years so it is great to see the bird helping two such worthy causes.”

The 8ft bird has been sponsored by Love2shop, the Wirral-based rewards and incentives specialists and has been dedicated to the memory of Paul Rice who was seen by business and trade union leaders and in particular football fans as a person who epitomised The Spirit of Liverpool.
